New SML Limit for BPA on Plastic Food Contact Materials (FCM), Commission Regulation (EU) 2018/213

22 February, 2018

On 12 February 2018, the European Commission published an amendment to Regulation (EU) No 10/2011 on plastic materials and articles intended to come into contact with food (known as "PIM Regulation"). The amendment concerns the use of bisphenol A (BPA) in varnishes and coatings intended to come into contact with food. This new regulation reduces the specific migration level (SML) for BPA from current value of 0,6 mg BPA per kg food to 0,05 mg BPA per kg food. Irrespective of the SML, no migration of BPA is permitted from varnished or coatings applied to materials and articles specifically intended to come into contact with infant formula, follow-on formula, baby food or any other kind of food and drinks specifically intended for infants and young children.

The new SML value will be valid from 6 September 2018.
